Located in Derweze, Turkmenistan, “Door To Hell” is a natural gas field that collapsed into an underground cavern in 1971 which turned into a giant gas crater. The pit wasn’t on fire until Soviet scientists decided to light it on fire in hopes of stopping the spread of methane gas. They estimated that it would burn out in a few weeks. It didn’t. The gas would burn for the next several decades continuously. Because of this the fire pit has become world-renown and a very popular tourist destination. Door To Hell has a total area of 5,350m or the size of a football field which is massive. Experience it here with this video.
